Our Dyslexia Program

St. John Catholic School in Bartlesville strives to provide appropriate educational instruction for all students who are entrusted to our care including students who face the challenges associated with dyslexia.

  • SJCS offers Take Flight, a research-based comprehensive intervention for students with dyslexia written by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas Texas.

  • SJCS has three Take Flight instructors who provide remediation during the school day.

  • Classroom teachers participate in ongoing in-service on the needs of students following Structured Literacy Instruction which is an effective reading instruction focusing on decoding words, benefiting ALL students, and vital to dyslexia students. St. John Catholic School is training all reading teachers to implement Structured Literacy Instruction in all our classrooms to improve the reading skills of all students.

What is dyslexia?

“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”  (IDA definition)
